Believing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be isn’t always easy.
Trusting the timing of your life starts with dealing with what is. It means accepting your current circumstances.
That doesn’t mean you condone them! Acceptance simply means you admit where you are—however shitty that situation may be. Pretending things are different won’t get you anywhere. In fact, I believe that will slow down your progress.
You can only build something solid when the foundation is solid. And I believe acceptance is key to creating something new. Something more aligned.
Acceptance isn’t always easy. (I could write an entire article about that, but I’ll leave it at this for now…)
Now how do you do that? How do you trust the timing of your life?
I think it’s a choice. It’s something you decide to do.
You decide to believe that life is happening for you—not to you.
You decide to believe that the Universe has a planning department that is way more capable and advanced than anything you and I could ever create or envision.
You decide to believe that there is something better in store for you, and it’s making its way to you. Even when you can’t see it. Even when it feels like you’ve been stuck here forever. Even when it feels unfair.
Then remind yourself of that as often as needed: I trust the timing of my life!
As Steve Jobs said “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”
That’s so true. With hindsight almost everything is logical. I’m reminded of a friend who told me that he understands why he didn’t meet his girlfriend sooner. He can see exactly why, if they had met earlier, they would not have been ready.
I can connect the exact dots that led me to my current home. No matter how frustrating it was when I was outbid on other properties.
You’re not meant to understand it all in this moment. You’re not meant to know how something is going to happen. Or when. It’s not your job!
Your job is to trust. Your job is to choose to focus on what you can control—which is your actions, your thoughts, your vibration and how you respond to your emotions.
I know that’s easier said than done. But if you’re willing to do the work, I know you can do this or learn how.
And when it’s hard to feel the trust, you can try these tips to prevent yourself from going into ‘control mode” or taking actions left, right and center simply because you’re looking for certainty.
1. Ground and center yourself.
When you’re worried it means you’re in your head. That’s not where the solution lies to feeling more trust. You can use one of my free guided meditations on Insight Timer to get grounded.
2. Be committed but not attached.
Set an intention or goal, but allow yourself to let go of the how and the when.
3. Look for small signs or evidence.
Sometimes we need a little reassurance, and I think there are signs all around us when we choose to see them.
4. Talk to a dear friend or loved one and get your concern off your chest.
We are social beings and we need connection. Sharing what’s on your mind gives your friends a chance to be there for you. Plus connecting results in oxytocin for everyone 🙂
5. Keep moving forward.
Baby steps are fine. We’re usually looking for a fix-it-all solution and we forget the power of a lot of smaller steps.
And remember to be kind to yourself. Life can be tough, and there’s no need to beat yourself up.
Here’s to trusting the timing of your life! I know I feel so much better when I’m able to do that 🙂
PS After writing this article, I looked up the quote from Steve Jobs to make sure I referenced it properly. And I was surprised to read the entire quote:
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
Well, thanks for the summary, Mr. Jobs! 🙂
