3 Tips to improve air quality

July 5, 2013

The purity of the air you breathe in is very important. Nowadays the indoor air quality leaves much to be desired. This is due to factors such as lack of ventilation, dust, bacteria, traces of fungus and pets. Research in the USA has shown that poor indoor air quality is one of the top 5 causes of health problems. Poor indoor air quality is linked with health conditions such as the development and aggravation of asthma, respiratory issues and assorted allergies.

The good news is that you can easily improve the quality of the air you breathe in. These 3 tips explain how:

1. Humidify the air

Dry air (<30% humidity) is linked to several respiratory tract issues, as well as irritated mucous membranes and dry skin. When the air is too dry, you run a higher risk of catching a cold, for example. A healthy humidity level ranges between 40% and 60%. You can humidify the air the old-fashioned way by boiling water on the stove, placing a cup of water on the radiator or with an aroma diffuser.

2. Ionize the air

The air quality is improved because more negative ions are released into the air. These ions attach themselves to the positive ions, which causes dust to fall on the ground (so that it no longer pollutes the air). As a result you breathe in less dust. At the seashore and high in the mountains, lots of negative ions are naturally present, which is one of the reasons why being in the mountains or at the coast is so healthy. You can ionize the air with an ionizer or an aroma diffuser.

3. Purify the air

Essential oils help purify the air because of their antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects. Bardeau (1991) discovered that 90% of microbes in the air were killed by diffusing essential oils. This effect was achieved within 3 hours. Research by French medical doctors Jean Claude Lapraz and Christian Duraffourd showed that Oregano, Cinnamon, Thyme and Clove are the strongest and most effective antibiotic essential oils used against different types of infectious illnesses. Cinnamon and Clove are, therefore, used in the Healthy Air essence that helps disinfect and purify the air and stimulates the immune system. It can be used as a preventative, as well as on the spot to accelerate wellness, such as when you have a cold or flu. Thyme is used in the Healthy Air Kids oil. On top of that, aroma diffusers have an extra purifying effect because of the built-in air filter.

Another important aspect of air quality is the odour of air. Since scent has a large impact on how we feel, it is essential that the environment we live in smells pleasant. With the help of aromatherapy, odours can be eliminated and a nourishing atmosphere can be created.
