3 powerful questions to kick start the New Year

December 30, 2015

Wishing wall on Times Square Visitor CentreI remember when I took this picture several years ago in New York. This is the wishing wall for New Year’s Eve. You can write down your hopes & dreams on a colourful piece of confetti and it will be released during the ball drop at midnight on Times Square. Of course I added my wish to the wall 🙂

As we get ready to go into the New Year this is an important time to pause for a moment and ask yourself what it is you want.

In order to be able to invite in something new it is equally important to ensure you have made room for that new thing or person to be able to enter into your life. That is why I have created these 3 powerful questions to help you get ready for a fabulous New Year.

I recommend you take out pen and paper (there is power in writing things down) and allow yourself to be open to new insights.

Question 1: What is the most important thing you need to let go of in order to have closure for the past year?

It may be tempting to skip this question and go right to the fun bit and dream of what you want to attract in the coming year, but I highly recommend you take the time to let this question sink in first. Just go with your gut instinct.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you read this question? Try not to judge or analyze it, just go with what comes up for you. Once you are clear on what it is you need to release, then proceed to question #2.

Be sure to take as much time as you need for this. You might want to revisit this question a few times in the coming days and add to it…

Question 2: What will help you in letting go? Which actions can you take right now that will support the releasing?

Again, I recommend you go with the first thing that comes to mind. Do you need to write a letter to a person to get closure on something (you may choose to write the letter to get things off your chest, but perhaps burn it if sending the letter is inappropriate). Do you need to clean your desk, clear out your closet, throw away old letters or notebooks?

It can be anything, as long as you feel that this action supports you in letting go of whatever it is you feel you need to let go of.

This may be inconvenient, but I have learned there is huge power in these actions. It will help shift something because you make it tangible through a concrete action.

Question 3: What do you want to open up to? What do you want to invite into your life in the New Year?

It may be a hope or dream that you have wanted to create for a long time, it may be a goal you have already been working towards, or it can be something you had not thought of before.

Whatever it is, ask yourself whether it would make you happy to have this in your life, does it bring you joy?

If it doesn’t entice you then perhaps choose to create something else that does.

Research has shown that it is way more powerful to write down your goals and it highly increases the chance you achieve them. So write it down!

BONUS question: Which inspired actions can you take towards your goal or dream?

Take a moment every day or at least every week to ask yourself what you can do now to take a step closer to reaching this goal or living this dream. The idea of an inspired action is to let the answer bubble up from inside you. Let yourself be inspired by your inner wisdom, your intuition.

It often knows way more than the rational mind can comprehend. So simply ask yourself the question and then wait for an answer.

This answer may come in the form of a thought or idea, or it may be something that stands out in a conversation or a song. Perhaps a headline in an email catches your attention. Simply trust that you will know when it is an answer to your question and then take immediate action.
