I guess that depends on who you ask—and at which stage in their personal development 😉
If you had asked me twenty years ago—I would have told you that being a highly sensitive person (HSP) is awful. That being a sensitive soul (as I prefer to call HSP’s) is exhausting and frustrating. That it limits what you can do and where you can go. For years it has felt like a curse for me.
If you ask me now—I’d tell you that it’s a gift! That being highly sensitive allows me to access my intuition with much more ease, it enables me to support my clients and sense what is off for them. It helps me be in tune with my body and know what supports me or what might derail my health and well-being.
But in truth being a sensitive soul is neither good nor bad. It simply is.
What makes it feel good or bad is how you are able to deal with that specific aspect of your genetic makeup.
If you, like me at the time, haven’t yet learned how to handle your sensitivity then it probably doesn’t feel like something positive. Chances are you’re experiencing a lot of the negative side effects of being a sensitive soul.
Does any of this sound familiar?
- Noise or the ‘wrong’ kind of music drains you.
- You are easily distracted and find it hard to focus.
- You can feel sad or angry for no apparent reason.
- You feel like there is something wrong with you, because not everybody is impacted by things the way you are.
- When you have to do too many things at once you get irritated.
- You often feel misunderstood or alone.
- When you’ve been around other people you need time on your own to recharge.
The good news is that you can learn what to do differently!
It starts by opening yourself up to the possibility that your sensitivity might actually be positive. It can be an extra tool in your toolkit you can put to good use. In fact, it might give you an edge over people who are less sensitive. Because you pick up on things they don’t notice.
Being a sensitive soul has become my asset. And it can become yours, too! You just need to learn how to embrace and manage your sensitivity.
