What does it mean to lose touch with yourself?

Losing touch with yourself means you’ve adapted to expectations and obligations for so long that you no longer hear (or know) what you want or need. You say ‘yes’ when everything inside you says ‘no’, tone yourself down (or up) to fit in, and do what’s expected instead of asking “Is this what I actually want?”

It happens slowly—one yes at a time—so gradually most people don’t notice until their energy, health or happiness forces them to. You didn’t get lost because there’s something wrong with you. You got lost because you were taught to leave yourself behind.

This is how I lost myself

How do I know if I’ve lost touch with myself?

There are five common signs:

  1. You say ‘yes’ when you feel like saying ‘no’.
  2. You’re so busy doing what’s expected that you never stop to ask “Is this what I actually want?”
  3. You doubt your instincts or ignore your intuition.
  4. You’re not entirely sure who you are or what makes you happy.
  5. You look successful (or at least like everything is fine) on the outside, but you’re not entirely happy on the inside.

What to do when you’ve lost touch with yourself.

What is comfortably miserable?

Comfortably miserable means you’re not quite happy where you’re at, but not yet unhappy enough to do something about it.

And that’s what makes it so dangerous: a crisis demands action, but comfortably miserable never forces you to change. It just… continues. You function, you deliver, you smile in the right moments—while drifting further from yourself one manageable day at a time.

Stop being comfortably miserable.

Can you prevent burnout before it happens?

Yes, and that’s the heart of my work: coming home to yourself consciously and deliberately, before a wake-up call forces you. I know because I needed more than one. I burned out at 24, spent three years doing everything right at the body level — and still needed a second wake-up call at 27. Because the real cause wasn’t my lack of energy. It was that I had slowly gotten away from myself by doing everything that was expected and required, I was fitting in and taking care of everyone but me.

A burnout is usually a combination of factors. Please don’t wait for a wake-up call to force change.

Don’t wait for the wake-up call

What are the early warning signs of burnout?

Your body sends the warnings long before your mind admits them: headaches, poor sleep, brain fog, irritability, colds that keep returning—and needing willpower for things that used to flow. The tricky part: you’ll be the last person to notice you’re at risk, because pushing through has come to feel normal and the changes are so gradual that they are hard to notice.

What is scary excited?

My definition of scary excited is when I’m about to do something and I’m really excited about it but also a tad scared or apprehensive. Hence: scary excited!

I believe we need to be scary excited regularly because it’s a sign of growth. It’s an indication you’re venturing outside your comfort zone and are trying something new. If you don’t you’re getting complacent.

In Dutch we have the saying “Standing still is going backwards.” Which indicates that you need to move forward/grow/evolve in order to not be worse off. Like in nature where things are either growing or dying—literally.

What is a sensitive soul or highly sensitive person?

A highly sensitive person (HSP) has a biological trait that causes them to process sensory information more deeply and thoroughly than others. This isn’t a disorder or condition, but rather a normal variation in about one-fifth of the population. HSPs typically notice subtleties others miss, are more easily overwhelmed by intense stimuli (like loud noises or chaotic environments), process emotional information deeply, and often have strong empathic abilities. This trait is innate and has been identified across many species, not just humans.

Because their brain processes information in more depth, that impacts how they live and work. To find out whether you are a sensitive soul aka highly sensitive person you can take the free Sensitivity Quiz here.

What is a Life Transformation Mentor?

A Life Transformation Mentor guides the whole person—life and work, inner and outer—back to who they truly are. My work offers hope with a compass: intuitive guidance back to the you who feels energized, calm, and aligned—at home in yourself again.

Where most approaches work at the mental level, my mentoring works on all levels: physical, emotional, mental and energetic—because a change in one area ripples through everything else. This isn’t one-size-fits-all formulas or endless advice; it’s reconnecting you to your own strength, clarity, and energy in a way that’s both profound and practical.

And if you’ve done a lot of work on yourself but results don’t stick, it’s likely the underlying energy hasn’t shifted. That deeper layer is where I excel—because when the energy shifts, everything changes.
