How to stay grounded in stormy weather

July 5, 2013

Being grounded is one thing. But staying grounded through stress, busyness, changing schedules and physical challenges is the real deal. That’s what will really give you a leading edge. For you won’t be as much affected by what is going on around you. You will be able to use your power, not your force, to make your way through. Staying grounded is really basic and can be very challenging at the same time.

Simple ways to ground are to talk a walk in nature, work in the garden or take a salt bath. I teach my clients a specific and powerful way to ground when they work with me. People sometimes think that because I’m good at grounding it means that it was all natural to me. It wasn’t. I had to exercise and practice quite a bit. (They often say you are here to teach what you learned, and that certainly applies in this case.) But I did master it and now it is part of my daily routine.

By the way, if you are just learning to ground yourself and sometimes wonder whether it has worked, I just want to share a few things.

  1. It gets easier over time (so don’t worry if you didn’t feel anything. I didn’t experience much the first couple of times I tried it. Honestly, it took me quite a while to get the hang of it because I was so used to being ‘in my head’ all the time.)
  2. You will be able to ground faster the more you do it
  3. The more you exercise centering yourself the ‘deeper’ that centering becomes and the longer it lasts

So how can you tell that you are more grounded than you were before the exercise? You may feel a heaviness in your feet or legs. You may have a sense that the energy or weight is more evenly distributed over your body. You may feel that you have more contact with the ground, standing more firmly on the floor. You may feel that your mind has calmed down a little, with less thoughts running around your head.

The more you practice grounding, the easier it becomes to focus and center yourself. And that will benefit you in many areas of your life. The more you are grounded, the easier it is to laser-focus on something. Not being bothered by what else is going on around you or in your life. Grounding strengthens the ability to be centered and have your attention on one single thing. So you can give it your full focus and energy, being most productive and efficient.

The simple tool of grounding has really made a big difference in my life and it certainly enabled me to stay in the moment and fully focused during the pre-hurricane Sandy winds and turmoil right before my workshop in New York City this weekend.
